On Wednesday, November 18th, TBI’s Social Action Committee presented a Zoom Forum on “Food Insecurity in Our Community” Over 100 people tuned in to learn about this critical topic. The program was moderated by Julie Harnick, Executive Director of the Port Washington Community Chest and founder of the Port Washington COVID Response Fund. Panelists included: Sister Kathy Somerville, Parish Outreach Director Our Lady of Fatima RC Church; Lourdes O. Tagliatela, Director, Parish Social Ministry, St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church; Jacob Dixon, Education Director, Littig House Community Center; Sheryl Albanese, a Coordinator of the Community Chest Food Insecurity Initiative; and Tara Freeman of Island Harvest.

After learning about the scope of how many people face food insecurity and some of the root causes via information provided by Island Harvest, each panelist answered questions about the services they provide to Port Washington residents and the need and challenges in doing so. They also discussed ways that individuals and groups can help address these issues. A full list of contact information and “How to Help" is linked below.
This program would not have been possible without the tremendous organizing efforts of several TBI congregants including Janet Lavin, Chair of the Committee, as well as Dori Fishbin, Gail Seiden, Debbie Mishan and Allison White. Staff members, Cathy Seldin and Julie Cheever also provided invaluable support. If you would like to become involved with the Social Action Committee or be added to the Social Action Committee email list, please contact Allison White at (917) 848-4861 or
