Our History & Mission

grandmom and child

Temple Beth Israel is an egalitarian, contemporary Conservative synagogue that has been serving the greater Port Washington community for 80 years. Our members enjoy a lively Jewish experience that embraces all generations and levels of Jewish observance. From our newest congregants to those that are second, third and fourth generation TBI families, we take pleasure in sharing our talents and passions with each other.

Rabbi Mishkin and Hazzan Blum personally connect with TBI members. Rabbi Mishkin, better known as Rabbi Mike, inspires us with sermons that connect the Torah to our everyday world. Whether playing baseball with congregants, discussing the weekly Torah portion, or visiting a member in time of need, Rabbi Mike is a thoughtful listener and comforting presence.

Our Hazzan is one of those rare individuals whom everybody loves. He nurtures our young adults through their B’nai Mitzvah and serves as a continued presence throughout the life cycle events of our congregation. He and his wife Gerri, have more than 30 years of dedicated service at TBI.

Temple Beth Israel is committed to providing members with the highest quality education at each stage of life and our experienced educators know how to make learning fun. TBI’s nursery school is open to children of all backgrounds and religions.

Big stack of books

The Hebrew school has a complete curriculum that covers Hebrew language, Jewish culture, history and values. Students continue in TBI’s Hebrew High program which culminates with Confirmation. Adult learning includes Torah study, Shabbat Lunch-n-Learn and Scholar-in-Residence programs.

Along with the clergy, congregants pray, learn, laugh, and celebrate together. Our Purim Carnival, Welcome Back BBQ, Community Seder and other events and programs are part of what makes TBI so much more than a synagogue. Temple Beth Israel is truly a “home away from home”.
